Back in 09 I came across an article on Slate.com about a guy in New Jersey who did a daily video blog about wine. Now, I’m not much of a vinofile (I get most of my wine from a box), but I was interested in finding out about someone who was making a go of video blogging.
I watched a few of his videos and discovered that he also had some videos about using social media to promote your business, and that’s when I came across this video. I won’t say it changed my life (that would be cheesy), but it made a huge impact on how I go about my day.
The whole video is valuable for anybody who is interested in building a business, but the the thing that really affected me—the thing that hit me like a hammer, was one line: “stop doing shit you hate!”.
The moment I heard “Stop doing shit you hate!” I realized I was doing a lot of shit that I hated. I wasn’t lying or cheating, or working in a salt mine, but I wasn’t living my life. I was spending it putting money in someone else’s pocket.
I realized I had to make a change. It took a while to get there, hell, I’m not there yet. But just knowing that I had to make a change, and that I was moving toward something else, something for me, made a great deal of difference in how I felt about myself and the people around me.
It’s almost a new year, and that’s a great time to make a change. My wish for you is that you can stop doing shit you hate.
